WACON CORPORATION of Denver,
Colorado operated a yeast production from cheese whey pilot plant in Denver for
a number of years. Processing of
cheese whey resulted in the generation of odor compounds from the bio-reactor
and yeast dryer that were often offensive to WaCon and its neighbors.
Phoenix Bio-Systems was asked to help solve the odor problem at the lowest
possible cost. Phoenix provided the
design for a simple odor bio-filtration system which utilized soil as the active
media. Volatile odor compounds,
such as organic acids produced during processing, were collected in the exhaust
air from the dryer and yeast culture bio-reactor and pumped through a soil bed
filter designed by Phoenix and constructed by WaCon Corporation personnel.
Microbial degradation of the volatile organic compounds in the captured
air eliminated the odor problem. WaCon
Corporation was able to solve its odor problem at minimal cost, using
inexpensive materials, its own labor, and design assistance from Phoenix
Bio-Systems.
