Ocean Environment - Videos


 PBS video library includes underwater scenes from reefs in the Caribbean basin. Some are still in good condition- many are not. Some of these videos illustrate efforts to restore reefs in the basin, while some are here just for your enjoyment. Due to the size of some of the movies there may be a delay playing.

Coney

Two black spots at the tip of the lower jaw and two more at the tail base. the body color is a red or brown background with deep blue spots. When exciteded, the Coney may show bicolor effects. coneies grow to just over one foot in size.

Lizardfish

Clearfin Lizardfish, at over a foot and one half it has eight or nine light centered, black blotched, bluish lateral stripes. The Lizardfish migrate to sandy patches of the ocean bottom, often beries itself leaving only eyes and nostrils exposed.

Flounder

PEACOCK FLOUNDER - All flat fish start life symmetrically. After just a few days one eye will migrate to the other side and will then be the top side of the body. At this time, the fish settles down to its bottom-dwelling, camouflaged existence.

Cleaner Goby

At two inches in size, the Goby with its bright colors attracts other fish to cleaning stations set up by them. Gobies gain a free meal of parasites off of the fish that arrive, hence the name cleaners.

Ship Wrecked

Resting on the bottom of the Caribbean Sea, a mile off of the south coast of Roatan, Honduras, lies Mr. Bud. Mr. Bud gives refuge to many types of fish, and interesting diving as well as extending natural reef in that location.

Yellowhead Jawfish

You will find the Yellowhead Jawfish at the sea floor turning slowly above its burrow. It feeds on small organisms passing by. With a Yellowish head, and a white body, they grow two to three inches in length.

Queen Angelfish

An Angelfish commonly found near reefs in the wormer sections of the Western Atlantic Ocean. Feeding primary on sponges and also some tunicates, jellyfish, corals as well as plankton and algae. They will reach up to 45 cm and weigh up to 1.6 kg.
