When neither anaerobic nor anoxic (denitrifying) systems are appropriate, aerobic systems may be employed for the removal of organic compounds or the nitrification of ammonia.

 PBS designs and builds Fixed-Film Aerobic Bio-Reactors for the removal of recalcitrant organics and the oxidation of ammonia in groundwater and wastewater.  High rate, downflow fixed-film Bio-filters, wherein microbes are immobilized on solid media achieve high efficiency at low cost.

 PBS also designs and builds Biologically Activated Carbon reactors wherein microbes are immobilized on activated carbon particles. In these systems, upflow configuration through an expanded bed of media is utilized. These reactors have been employed for the removal of BTEX and similar mixtures in groundwater pump and treat systems.
